Peregrine Slinger on "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (Spoilers)"

Glad you posted.

I thought this movie was alright. It was certainly well produced and acted, though none of the big roles (Sean Bean, I think?) really offered much.

This was a sad point in American Film where, like Marvel Comics, every tween book was being raped and pillaged to be rushed into theaters as some big CGI blockbuster for kiddies. Most of them bombed, this one no real exception.

Pierce Brosnan as a horse. That is all.

I watched the movie before I read the book (Starting and finishing the book last night, about 4 hours read time)

MOVIE:

So, it starts off alright, Percy is in school, bullies everywhere, your average school. He goes on a trip to a museum. This is where the movie starts to loose it's appeal. His substitute English teacher pulls him to the back and turns into a fury and Percy flips out, not knowing his heritage. Once it hits this part, the movie seems to get a bit rushed as Grover rushes him back to his house and him and his mom dip out in a Chevy. (Camaro via book, but it looked more like an SS Chevelle or Nova in the movie). Scene cuts to night as they're driving down the highway, then comes the first attack (assuming they've been driving for hours, you'd think they would have been attacked by other things by now) Anyway, they get attacked, and Percy ends up in Camp Half Blood where he meets Annabeth, the brunette sword-wielding daughter of Athena, where he proceeds to sword fight her and beat her (previously undefeated).

I'll stop here. This is about the first 30-45 minutes of the movie.

One thing I've found, is that the movie is a completely different storyline then the book. Major parts have been changed. Overall, it is a good movie, but don't expect it to be the same as the book..At least with Harry Potter and Eragon, they were fairly close to the book. This is no where near it. He never "Fights" Annabeth, they're only 12, he fights with Ares (God of War) etc. I liked it as a family movie however, it is clean, and the scenes are well put together until the last training scene between Percy and Annabeth before the credits.

Peregrine Slinger on "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World"

Scott Pilgrim was ok. My major failings with it came in the last act, wherein they had no idea what to do with the story.

What it boiled down to was a lot of repetitive action scenarios, stylistically flashy but insubstantial choreography, and almost no real final point to the through line. They were falsely trying to raise the stakes and it just didn't work.

Then that whole extra life element was thrown in and it just doubled how annoying the last act was.

I sincerely enjoyed the first two acts of the film very much. Thomas Jane's cameo was beastly, and I even liked Michael Cera alright.

That is of course till later, when I read the first book, and realized Michael Cera was COMPLETELY WRONG for the character.

So, yes the movie is corny, it's based off of a comic book. I found it amusing and I've watched it 4 times so far :D. I'd recommend it after playing some old school Tekken on PS1 or so.

The only issue I have with it is that Sex Bob-omb uses WAAYYY too much distortion on the opening song. Other than that, fun movie

The website has been pretty static the last eleven months, and everything has been working pretty well. However, we are going to start making some enhancements to the website. A few of the changes are already live:

The forums have changed their address. They are now at http://forums.strikeaposefilms.com

The contact page has been redesigned. It now has a contact form that you can fill out and send e-mails directly.

We are now accepting comments from non-registered users. Users who do not have accounts will be required to solve a Captcha before posting their comments. Registered users get the benefit of skipping the Captcha, and you still have to be registered to use the forums. Registered users may get other benefits in the future, so it is worth taking the few moments to create an account.

Some updates currently under consideration include forum enhancements and a visual redesign of the site. Check back often!

With the material lodged in that brain of yours, we can expect more from such a Saga. Maybe finally introduce the Peregrine himself in a feature.

And then we put Blind as a cameo in it, with a keyboard, and they march down the streets of the Rio. bwahaha xD

But seriously. Line of Sight definitely gives the Peregrine Saga more detail, and introduces a story that Locked Blades failed to do, and was more of a battle.

I look forward to seeing the premiere, and hope there will be more coming from this series.

Peregrine Slinger on "Le Samourai"

So I recently watched Melville's "masterpiece" LE SAMOURAI, a film about a hit-man in France that is either "betrayed" or caught or something while performing a hit. His plans go askew, and he has to avoid the cops for a while, not only reconfiguring his alibis but also snaking his way out of a suspect line up by doing seemingly nothing. He eventually is pursued through the city streets by the police, also while dealing with his untrustworthy employers and a couple of lovely dames. Although, as an unusual turn for the crime drama with the noir-ish anti-hero, he never calls them "dames", let alone anything I can remember.

Apparently the main character, the emotionally contained and perfection-centered Jeff Costello, is something of an icon to the cinema that followed, but I had not yet heard his name. Regardless, he is a figure worth appreciating as I'm sure he set a standard for the emotionless hitman (see: Leon, et al) similar to Eastwood's not-so-nice-cowboy Man With No Name. As far as minimalism goes he doesn't have much to do with the role but still merits a character of some fascination.

In the meantime he meets a bunch of characters, there is very little dialogue, and everything is meticulously, though not artistically shot. It's film grammar at its most basic, a term many refer to as "minimalistic." I refer to it as boring, even for someone who created the French New Wave-- a film style I typically despise--and is seemingly going against all the noisy nonsense of someone like the more well-known Godard. If this movie was made by him, it would have been called "Breathless" and it would have sucked. As it stands, it merely takes a while to reach full temperature, never really getting cooked but always simmering. You have to keep an eye on it, even when it looks like it isn't doing anything.

Granted, there is something worth watching in this movie: The acting is brilliant. Not a single line is wasted by a single character and the look in every pair of eyes holds a deeper meaning than face value. Further, some shots are so well framed they could be eternally iconic photographs of statements on different human emotions, such as authoritarian frustration, lust built on curiosity, or even a complete lack of catharsis. When edited together they tell a very A-to-B story, but on their own many shots tell something far more noteworthy-- a moment in time, as films are supposed to do.

The star, still-active Alain Delon, is probably one of my new favorite faces, as he has a face practically carved for the camera. There is dimension and gravitas to how he simply moves (or doesn't move) his eyes in ways I've only seen in the likes of Christopher Walken or...bing time is up I couldn't think of anyone else off the top of my head. He's really just that interesting to watch. If nothing else, even when I was most bored with this film, the look on Delon's face kept me watching, almost just out of the desire to see his emotions change! It's a shame Melville didn't keep his original ending gestus. I think that's probably one of the greatest robberies of cinematic history.

So while the movie has sparse action and little actual dialogue about honor codes or morality, we do see some of it through just the main character's behaviors. I really can say this is practically a silent film with the exception of a few scenes (and music), but it is also a graceful film that does its best to carry its audience moment-to-moment through actual momentum.

I'll want to watch this movie again for the ace-camerawork involved, because there are some really breakthrough moments in dolly and tripod work that I think a lot of steadycamers in this day and age should pay attention to. People don't walk around to look at things- they pivot and pedestal. I think this movie explains a lot about how people typically behave, or could behave, in this kind of situation--the smart ones would keep their mouths shut and their eyes open. Its funny, because I wish the average movie going audience would do the same.

In the end, I will watch this movie again, some day. I recommend any film buff gives it a view, but anyone looking for action or swordplay or any sort of intense sequence of violence not put this in your DvD player. Just because it's called "Le Samourai" doesn't mean it's about anything its strange title might suggest. Let's just finish off the review by putting it this way-- this is one of those movies where the title is, thankfully, never spoken.

I'm sure if we put our heads together, and with the crew of people we both are more than likely able to get, we could definately produce something great.

Avatar has gotten another trailer, this time with dialog and more plot information. This movie really looks amazing, and is still the only film I am looking forward to. It releases December 18th, 2009. When this movie comes out, make sure you see it in a theater that supports stereoscopic 3D. It will cost a bit more then a normal ticket, but the word is that it looks incredible.

Well, I have finally finished reading The Penultimate Truth by Philip K. I have been doing a great deal of reading, just not material of my choice. However I have finally found the time to finish The Penultimate Truth. I started reading the book because of its similarities to Fallout 3.

The story follows a character named Nick St. James, who is the president of an underground fallout shelter. He and millions of others have been living underground for years in shelters while the world above them was engaged in a nuclear war. Or at least this is what they have been told. When an important member of the shelter falls ill and is in need of medical supplies, Nick St. James leaves to find help, but only finds that things are not exactly as they have been told.

Or at least that's what the back of the book and the first couple of chapters would have you believe. In the end, the story centers around a different group of characters, leaving Nick at the wayside for the majority of the story. The plot still remains interesting enough, but it was surprising how the story did not at all go in the direction I was expecting.

There are a few notable similarities between this and Fallout, but not enough to claim plagiarism. At worst a few details of the Fallout 3 universe were inspired by the book, but overall the two stories are uniquely their own things. Plus, Fallout 3 was much more interesting in my opinion.

Overall, the book was enjoyable but not a must read. Fallout 3 fans might get some enjoyment out of reading it and seeing another take on a similar topic. Or if you simply like post-apocalyptic stories you could certainly do worse.

7/10

I am now moving onto Neuromancer by William Gibson

Case was the sharpest data thief in the Matrix, until an ex-employer crippled his nervous system. Now a new employer has recruited him for a last-chance run against an unthinkably powerful artificial intelligence. With a mirror-eyed girl street-samurai riding shotgun, he's ready for the silicon-quick, bleakly prophetic adventure that upped the ante on an entire genre of fiction.

I have finished Snow Crash, and I have to say that overall the book was awesome. It is certainly one of my all time favorite books that I have read. If you enjoy cyberpunk (or science fiction in general) then you should check it out.

I am now moving on to The Penultimate Truth by Philip K. Dick.

What if you discovered that everything you knew about the world was a lie? That is the question at the heart of Philip K. Dick's futuristic novel about political oppression, the show business of politics, and the sinister potential of the military-industrial complex. This wry, paranoid thriller imagines a future in which the earth has been ravaged, and cities are burnt-out wastelands too dangerous for human life. Americans have been shipped underground, where they toil in crowded industrial anthills and receive a steady diet of inspiring speeches from a president who never seems to age. Nick St. James, like the rest of the masses, believes in the words of his leaders. But that all changes when he travels to the surface - where what he finds is more shocking than anything he could possibly imagine

At last we have a trailer for James Cameron's much hyped new film Avatar, and I have to say that it looks absolutely amazing. This is the one movie I am still looking forward to this year, and from the looks of it I will not be disappointed. One of the big features of this film is its reportedly amazing use of stereoscopic 3D, which obviously does not come across in the trailer. Still, even without being in 3D this trailer is stunning. I cannot wait for this film to come out on December 18th, 2009.

The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora, a lush jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms, some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also home to the Na’vi, a sentient humanoid race that humans consider primitive, yet are more physically capable than humans. Standing three meters tall (approximately 10ft), with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Na’vi live in harmony with their unspoiled world. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora's forests in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence.

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies that are controlled by a human "driver" through a technology that links the driver's mind to their Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Sent deep into Pandora's jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora's beauties and dangers. There he meets a young Na’vi female, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched only by her ferocity in battle.

Over time, Jake integrates himself into Neytiri's clan, and begins to fall in love with her. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na’vi, forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

So I have since finished World War Z. I found it pretty enjoyable, although the lack of an overall narrative has made me forget most of the beginning of the book. Still, worth reading.

I have now moved on to Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, and I am absolutely loving this crazy and amazing novel.

Only once in a great while does a writer come along who defies comparison - a writer so original, he redefines the way we look at the world. Neal Stephenson is such a writer and Show Crash is such a novel, weaving virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip, cybersensibility to bring us the gigathriller of the information age.

SNOW CRASH

In reality, Hiro Protagonist delivers pizza for Uncle Enzo's CosaNostra Pizza, Inc., but in the Metaverse he's a warrior prince. Plunging headlong into the enigma of a new computer virus that's striking down hackers everywhere, he races along the neon-lit streets on a search-and-destroy mission for the shadowy virtual villain threatening to bring about the infocalypse. Snow Crash is a mind-altering romp though a future America so bizarre, so outrageous... you'll recognize it immediately.

I might as well bump up this topic. I finished Electric Sheep quite a bit ago. Overall a good book but a little disappointing. The whole time it felt like it was building up to a big confrontation, but that doesn't really pay off.

I am currently reading World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. So far I am really enjoying it. Rather than a grand overview or a single perspective, World War Z is a collection of individual accounts in the form of interviews of the characters by the author. Brooks plays the role of an agent of the United Nations Postwar Commission who published the novel a decade after the Zombie War in this fictional future after the United Nations left out much of his work from the official report, as it chose to focus on the facts and figures of the war rather than the human aspects he included. The novel charts a decade-long war against zombies from the view point of many different people and nationalities. In addition, the personal accounts describe the changing religious, geo-political, and environmental aftermath of the Zombie War.

So, I was looking at the movies available on Netflix that I could watch on my 360 and I came across Postal. I almost forgot that this movie existed, but I do remember the trailers being slightly interesting. I recall that the trailer came out around the same time that I watched the Uwe Boll interview on Gametrailers. He came across as a decent guy, so I remember thinking that I would give him one last chance to redeem himself and watch Postal. Of course then the film got released in the United States on less then two dozen screens, so I never got around to watching it. So when I found it on Netflix, I decided to give it a shot.

Wow. Honestly, I have no idea how Mr. Boll is so inept at creating even a slightly decent film. After all these years and bad movies that he has released, he has somehow managed not to learn a single thing. Postal was absolutely atrocious. Not a single joke in the 102 minutes was funny. Don’t get me wrong, I laughed all the time, but only at how awful most of the scenes were. The movie is clearly trying to come off as funny by being absurd (which is absolutely is), but it fails at actually being humorous due to half-assed execution. For example, the over the top scenes (such as the shootout at a German themed amusement park in which dozens of children get killed) are so poorly done that it’s actually hilarious for all the wrong reasons. Overall, the action scenes suck, the jokes fall flat, and the directing is bearable at best. If you have yet to see this movie, do yourself a favor and don’t. If you lack good judgment like me and actually watched this movie, let’s get together and form a “Postal Survivors Support Group”. Together we can get through this horrible experience.

I went to watch Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen last night with my friend, and decided to wait a day before writing a quick post about it. I wanted to see if my unfavorable gut reaction would change after having a little bit of time to reflect on it and discuss it with others. It has not.

Let me start off by saying that I really enjoyed the first Transformers film. It was an extremely entertaining movie with amazing special effects. Sure the plot was dumb, but it was based on children’s toys after all. I am totally capable of enjoying a dumb movie as long as the rest of it is entertaining. However, Revenge of the Fallen is so beyond dumb that it was no longer enjoyable. Scene after scene I found my self thinking “this is extremely retarded”. The plot, the constant dirty jokes, and the dialog were all very poorly done. Even most of the action scenes were insensible. But aside from all that, I think the greatest problem the movie has is that it has lost the charm/novelty that the first film had. All that the first Transformers had going for it was the crazy special effects and the “cool factor” of seeing giant robots fight each other for the first time, but all of that is gone now. The CG looks exactly the same as it did in the first film, no better or worse, but no longer special. Also, all of the action scenes had a very “been there, done that” feel to them. I just wanted the movie to show me something new and cool that would get me excited the way that the first movie did, and it eventually does at the very end. The final battle was spectacular, and blows away anything seen in the first film, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that up until that point I was barely entertained. In the end, I would have a hard time recommending this move.

On a bit of a side note, was anyone else extremely surprised by the amount of blatant racism in this movie? The most obvious example are the two “Jar Jar Bots” Skids and Mudflap who are disguised as compact hatchbacks, are constantly fighting, and talk in bad Ebonics about how dumb each other are. One of them even has a gold tooth, and when they were asked if they can read, they both say that they don’t know how to. There are a number of other examples, such as one scene that had a stereotypical bucktoothed black guy. I don’t think I have ever seen a movie that was so openly racist. I am honestly shocked that that sort of stuff can be in a movie these days.

I just got back from seeing Star Trek (trailer here), and I have to say that all the hype was well deserved. This is one of the best films I have seen in ages, and that is not just the Star Trek fan inside me talking. This movie is a fantastic sci-fi film that everyone should go see, even if you don't consider yourself a fan of Star Trek. The plot, acting, and special effects were all great. It also seems that my fears of the film becoming too mainstream and losing its Star Trek vibe were unwarranted, as the film certainly has a very Star Trek attitude. There is absolutely no mistaking this movie for anything but a Trek film.

However, I do have some complaints, but this is something that only other serious Star Trek fans would have issues with. I don't want to give any spoilers, but certain plot elements stand contrary to pretty much every other existing piece of Trek lore. Essentially, this movie says that something doesn't exist anymore when it clearly does in every other Star Trek series. I will be interested in seeing if this film ends up being considered canon, and if so if it is relegated to something like an "alternate timeline" instead of part of the "core" Star Trek story (which is what I expect).

Anyway, bottom line: SEE THIS MOVIE.

You guys all need to see Watchmen before the movie comes out, and by see I mean experience the epic amazingness that is the graphic novel. I don't usually read graphic novels because I have an issue with static art-- because of all the films I watched as a kid I can't pay attention to something that isn't moving (videogames probably contributed to this hence not playing an RPG for the last 3 years), but well, this one held my attention with its powerful writing and infinitely interesting characters.

Get it, read it, read it again, and love it before the movie comes out.

That that book has been on my list of books to read for a long time. Philip K. Dick has written a couple really great novels that I never got around to reading. Hopefully I can get around to those at some point.

Memory of Earth is the first book in the Homecoming Saga by Orson Scott Card. Humanity has lived for 40 million years on a planet called Harmony, after leaving an Earth that has been destroyed by human conflict. In order not to repeat the mistakes that led to the destruction of civilization on Earth, a computer, known as the Oversoul, was left as guardian of this planet.

High above the planet Harmony, the Oversoul watches. Its task, programmed so many millennia ago, is to guard the human settlement on this planet--to protect this fragile remnant of Earth from all threats. To protect them, most of all, from themselves.

The Oversoul has done its job well. There is no war on Harmony. There are no weapons of mass destruction. There is no technology that could lead to weapons of war. By control of the data banks, and subtle interference in the very thoughts of the people, the artificial intelligence has fulfilled its mission.

But now there is a problem. In orbit, the Oversoul realizes that it has lost access to some of its memory banks, and some of its power systems are failing. And on the planet, men are beginning to think about power, wealth, and conquest.

I am almost done with Ender in Exile. I am really enjoying it, but I can see other people being bored with it.
